Cilaos Reunion

Cilaos is a town and municipality on the French island of Réunion in the Indian Ocean. It is centrally located on the island, situated in a caldera at an altitude of 1,214 m. The introduction of embroidery can be attributed to the efforts of Angèle MacAuliffe, the daughter of a doctor who worked at a hot-spring clinic in the early 20th century. The techniques that she introduced have barely changed since then, and the popularity of "Days of Cilaos" embroidery largely owes to this consistency and tradition. Today, an embroidery house of the association allows a few workers to learn and demonstrate this delicate art to tourists.
